About vocals

Vocalist (from the Latin words vox – “voice” and vocalis – “sounding”) – a musical profession, a role in a musical collective, involves the performance of various vocal parts.

Now, the term vocalist almost coincides with the term singer, but in modern pop music it is interpreted somewhat more broadly, in particular, implying the possibility of recitation, recitative, etc.

Singer – the one who sings, is engaged in singing. Artist of vocal music: songs, romances, arias, choirs, singles, etc. A musician who performs music on a musical instrument, which is his own voice. The singer is the most common type of vocalist.

In classical music and in opera, the voice is interpreted exclusively as a musical instrument. Composers write music for this instrument, taking into account the skill and characteristics of the singer’s voice.

The leader-vocalist is a member of the musical group, performing mainly the main vocal parts.

Backing vocalist is a member of a musical group performing additional, harmonic vocal parts (peculiar backing songs).

Singing voices

There are various systems for classifying voices (and singers, respectively). Some of them take into account the strength of the voice, that is, how loud the singer can sing. Others – how mobile, virtuoso, distinct voice of the singer. Still others include non-musical characteristics, such as external data, acting ability, etc.

Most often, a classification is used that takes into account the range of the voice and gender of the singer. Even guided only by these two criteria, many varieties are obtained:

Female voices:

soprano – high female voice
mezzo soprano – medium female voice
contralto – a low female voice (in the choral music it is usually called simply viola)

Male voices:

tenor – high male voice
baritone – medium male voice
bass – low male voice

Other vocal varieties are coloratura soprano, dramatic tenor, bass baritone, bass profundo. There is even a category of male singers singing in a range of female voices. This type of voice is rare, but is still used mainly in opera. In Baroque music, many roles were written for castrati – male singers who underwent a castration operation as a boy to prevent mutation and to maintain a woman’s high voice. In modern vocal performance, these roles can be played by a singer who owns the developed technique of falsetto singing. Singers of this type are called counterattors (aka male alt).

About vocals (About vocals)

Where to learn to sing?

– the question is undoubtedly quite general: the fact is that some are interested, for example, jazz improvisation, others just have to feel confident in karaoke, etc.

Vocal classification by manner of performance

academic (classical, opera),
pop,
jazz,
folk

At the same time, it is the academic staging of the vocal that underlies everything: it gives freedom of voice possession.

At the same time, the transition from “jazz to academic” can become a real breakdown for the singer, which is why it is advisable to immediately decide what exactly you want to learn.

It is important to understand that for 2-3 months it is impossible to teach professionally singing even for people with a natural voice setting and absolute pitch.

In the case of academic vocals, the first year you will have to sing only exercises, vocalises (singing without words – “oooh” or “aaaa”) and simple songs.

Then you can gradually move on to romances and simple arias. The point is not that the basis of the science of singing is some technique available to the elect. In fact, you can tell how to sing correctly in half an hour, everything else is a matter of training.

In this sense, singing is like a sport. Depending on the natural abilities, it will turn out a little faster or a little slower, but in any case, hard training is needed. Vocal lessons are a story for several years.

The most common and most correct form of teaching vocal is individual lessons with a teacher (here we do not touch the ensemble-choral school – this is a whole separate world).

It’s quite difficult to find your teacher, and even recommendations do not guarantee anything: it’s still important to come together purely humanly, because you have to spend a lot of time together. Manners of teaching – even more than varieties of vocals, we can say that each teacher has his own style.

There is an old academic school, there are former rockers, etc. Of course, they have one thing in common: there are no singing teachers.

The vocalist’s past and / or true success on stage is not a guarantee that he will teach you to sing well.

The quality of the teacher’s singing does not directly affect the quality of teaching – moreover, the “do as I” principle does not work here, since everyone has a different voice apparatus (someone has a longer neck, someone has a shorter one).

Listening Testing
We cannot “see” the listening process, we can check it only indirectly - through the presence or absence of skills that are associated with it in one way or another.…
